Ethernet extension, LAN extension and Ethernet service delivery covers a wide range of solutions which can be divided into two basic categories:
- Simple Ethernet extension or LAN extension, where the requirement is to deliver Ethernet or LAN services to the customer site with the minimum of fuss.
- Managed Ethernet extension or Ethernet service delivery, where the requirement is to deliver fully managed Ethernet or LAN services to the customer site.
Simple Ethernet extension or LAN extension
Ethernet or LAN services can be delivered to a customer site over a wide variety of last mile services. Metrodata has a range of LAN extension devices where the last mile access is not Ethernet based, but typically may be some form of dedicated circuit, such as an E1 leased line. Metrodata also has a range of Ethernet media converters where the last mile access is Ethernet, but an NTU device is required to present the customer with the preferred connection type (e.g. 10/100/1000baseT copper Ethernet delivery over a fibre Ethernet last mile access), or alternatively as a demarcation device.
Managed Ethernet extension or Ethernet service delivery - MetroCONNECT family
Alternatively, where a Carrier or Service Provider wishes to deliver a managed Ethernet service then this can also be done over a wide variety of last mile (or first mile) services. The MetroCONNECT MC12000 Ethernet Service Delivery Platform offers the delivery of Ethernet services with management right onto the customer site. The MetroCONNECT family solution offers interface conversion or LAN extension as well as Ethernet service demarcation, with comprehensive remote management of the standalone Ethernet Demarcation Devices (or EDD's, otherwise known as Network Interface Devices or NID's) on the customer site using 802.3ah OAM or IP management such as SNMP or Telnet. Support for 10M, 100M and Gigabit Ethernet applications as well as Jumbo frames comes as standard across this product range.
The MC12000 offers a high density Ethernet Service Delivery solution with fibre or copper distribution from the core network to customer sites. The MC12000 operates in provider mode generating and terminating OAM frames according to IEEE 802.3ah. With muliple access links deployed resilience can be supported via either G.7042 LCAS, RSTP or 802.3ad link aggregation. In this way MC12000 enables maximum efficiency of use of the core network infrastructure, along with maximum flexibility of service delivery to the customer, whilst retaining management visibility right up to the customer demarcation point. By allowing management visibility onto the customer site it is easy to distinguish between equipment problems, customer site connection problems and last mile service delivery problems and therefore substantial operational savings can result.
The “hot swap” capability of modules and power supplies eases the provisioning of new services and the maintenance of existing services.
A wide variety of last mile service delivery types can be supported including:
- Ethernet service delivery via the FCC9000 I/O module and the FCM8000 or FCM9000 standalone units
- 1, 4 or 8 fractional E1 or T1 services via the WCC1100, WCC1400 and WCC1800 I/O modules and the WCM1100, WCM1400 and WCM1800 standalone units
- 1 or 2 framed E3 or DS3 services via the WCC3100 and WCC3200 I/O modules and the WCM3100 and WCM3200 standalone units
- SDH STM-1 or Sonet OC-3 services via the WCC5100 I/O module and the WCM5100 standalone unit
- Serial or HSSI services via the WCC_Serial and LHC1000 I/O modules and the WCM_Serial and LHM1000 standalone units
Alternatively the MetroCONNECT standalone family units can be used as managed Ethernet LAN extension without the need of MC12000 Delivery Platform, a wide range of interfaces are supported:
- Ethernet over copper or fibre via the FCM8000 and FCM9000
- 1, 4, 8 or 16 fractional E1 or T1 services via the WCM1100, WCM1400, WCM1800 and WCM1820
- 1, 2 or 4 framed E3 or DS3 services via the WCM3100, WCM3200 and WCM3400
- SDH STM-1 or Sonet OC-3 services via the WCM5100
- Serial via the WCM_Serial
- HSSI services via the LHM1000
